I don't know how well you do know family, when there's an easy get-out clause from doing the work by virtue of them being family. I think I assumed I'd grow up and know Newt better and that hasn't happened. And I imagine it's probably easier when they want you to know them, the current-them, rather than past-them. It sounds like your brother and Claire are an excellent combination.
