Re: Dietre + Oliver ; diner times
It was a good thing that Dietre sort of confirmed an appreciation for pie, because Oliver didn't exactly trust him or think he was normal - hello, Quiet Home - but anybody who liked pie couldn't have been too out there. Even so, he couldn't accurately judge Dietre's lack of enthusiasm about the diner's breakfast & dinner extensive menu. Oliver had a different approach to food than most people, and he recognized this about himself more acutely as he'd grown older. Especially after he'd gone away to art school where his roommates would laugh incredulously at the way Oliver hoarded those single serving boxes of Frosted Flakes and other nonperishable items from the school's cafeteria. They'll still be there tomorrow, man… and yeah, the cereal boxes always were there in the tomorrows, but it made Oliver feel better to hold onto an extra meal in his sock drawer just in case he was ever in need. Growing up in the kind of home he'd grown up in, when meals could be easily missed or withheld for disciplinary reasons, it made Oliver appreciate all of the nutrition that a couple of dollars in his pocket could do him. The fact that he essentially lived off of cold pop tarts and delivery pizza said more about his inaptitude in the kitchen than it did his tastebuds. Now that he'd moved into Sonrisa, Cris was pretty solid about cooking food that Oliver couldn't pronounce. Even just the occasional PB&J was an occurrence that Oliver was only beginning to recognize as a regularity.
Oliver stopped twirling the salt shaker when Dietre mentioned Misha, which was probably telling even if the look that autumnal brown eyes gave him from beneath a washed out and brashy fall of blond was just a little defensive. Oliver seemed to recover after a moment, as he stopped playing with the salt shaker and rather pulled it entirely into the curl of his fist.
"We are not alike." He'd figured that out after their conversation. "You could be like a brother of mine," which was to say, afraid. "I'm not sure I'm like anyone… I don't know, not anybody nice."
