She'd known what it was that she'd faced in the dark. She had the memory of seeing the girl's kind before, knowing the anger and flame. The djinn's fire had licked her skin, blistering and burning, and hot enough that it had only taken that briefest second to cause injury. Her fingers were still slim and pale, but the back of her hand, the inside of her wrist, part of her forearm, were all beginning to swell and bubble from the flame. It was more painful than it had any right to be, and she'd spent the remainder of her night hiding in a private compartment, cradling close to her body a wrist that was wrapped in a bar towel and ice. The easiest things she'd been able to find by feeling in the dark.
When the lights came back on, she made her way quickly off the train and set her feet toward home. And she walked. From the station, cutting through town, back to the over-large mansion that she shared with her brother. Her wrist throbbed along with her stolen heartbeat, the beat of it visible in her peripheral vision. She felt hot and cold at the same time, and tired. She wanted to lay down. She wanted to sleep. She wanted her arm to stop hurting.
It took too long to get back to the house, it was a struggle to let herself in, her feet stumbled on the stairs. She hurt. She'd known people who had died from burns, and she knew this was nowhere near that serious. But it hurt. Nothing eased it. She finally made it to her bedroom, walls covered by faces that seemed to watch her as she crossed the room to her bed, tucked into a corner where she'd painted pictures of Eddie. They made her smile (though it was more of a grimace), and she used her free hand to touch one of him smiling before she dropped the towel on the floor and toed off her shoes and crawled into bed. She curled on her left side, right arm cradled as carefully as possible, extra pillow there to support it as best she could, and then Emily closed her eyes, trying to find sleep to escape the throbbing of her world.
