Re: quicklog: adrian/newt - the lake
[Perhaps if it'd only been the introduction of a second variable, rather than an introduction of several, Adrian's approach would've worked. As it was not, it wouldn't. Newt knew this. He knew that perhaps Adrian would discover a 'cure' (he likely wouldn't; it was impossible), which would kill him or Sue or release the Obscurus, all of which would be horribly detrimental and tragic. If he didn't discover a cure, as was more probable, he would, in all likelihood, become rather unstable for a while, as he attempted to recalibrate. This could have detrimental effects, as well, but so could not telling him and having him discover it on his own, as he was so close to doing. This, Newt felt, left him with little choice but to inform his friend of the myriad variables the younger man now miscounted.
And he did indeed try to explain that Obscurials didn't work the way Adrian thought they did. Newt had studied another girl, remember. He'd met her, spoken with her, seen her die. But, Adrian didn't—or couldn't—hear what he had to say.] It's not like you think—[was the last bit that managed to escape lips dotted with freckles, before Adrian's panic was replaced by the sneer. Poor Adrian. Newt sighed. Sue wicked away the last of Adrian's tears.] If you don't want to be dead in a week, I'd think you'd give a fuck about a fucking compromise. [Spoken as mildly as ever. Newt silently put out the light at the tip of his wand when the street lamps around them came back to life. He held his wand limply.
He didn't pursue Sue, when he stepped back. He only looked at him, at parts of him. He knuckled one yellow eye. Somewhere inside of Newt, he knew he was to blame for this. And he'd be to blame if the Obscurus was let loose to wreak havoc. But, another part of him knew, no, it wasn't his fault. All he'd done was offer an explanation. He didn't know it'd come to this, whatever Sue said. He sighed again, feeling extremely weary, physically and of the situation. Sue's aggression and disgust was lost on Newt. Or rather, simply accepted, but not reciprocated. The same went for the coldness in the other's voice.] Let him calm down and he'll listen to reason.
