Steve's room: Janus A/Steve M
For pizza. [He still doesn't get his phone.] Janus. [He says his name this time. Softly.] Did you know that, when I was a kid, people said all the time—I mean, this was when eugenics was really kicking off—that I was a waste. A drain on resources, that others could use. And those people would eventually give back. I never could. I was too sick, too small. Sometimes, I believed them. My ma was always taking care of me. I know it's not easy, to let people do that. Take care of you. It takes strength. Not weakness. You have to swallow everything from your pride, to your privacy, and it's hard. [He shifts a little.] But, you're not a waste. You're not just taking up room. And me, Atticus, we both know you can take care of yourself, if you want to. But, we want to help.
