[She knew that the two men were talking, but she tuned them out for a time. Whatever they were saying, it wasn't always easy for her to follow, and she was doing her best to keep herself calm and not reacting to the pain. But though the man's hands were gentle, it was a lance of agony when his fingers found that point of injury. She couldn't help the automatic reaction, flapping out with her uninjured wing and opening her beak to give another rough squawk.
But unlike a normal bird, she didn't continue to flap and flail, and instead did her best to calm down and fold her uninjured wing back against her body. She trembled with the effort of it, her delicate ribs heaving as she breathed.
