[She shook her head.] It's okay. It has to be worse with your sister. Every time you talk about her she sounds so smart and great. [Mary tried to smile and touched his shoulder.] If you want to talk about it, this is the place. Booze, trees, no one around but some girl you just met a few weeks ago. [Mary gave him a smile, squeezed his shoulder lightly and then kept walking. It would have been pretty clear that Mary didn't know how to stop for anything. If there was a problem, she'd deal with it by working it out and moving forward. Of course that sometimes looked a whole lot like running away, but who was keeping score.
