Holidays, always the time for family, so all the commercials and the carols said. Hunter hated his family, and he was pretty sure they all hated him, too. And there was nobody Hunter hated more than his father, and nobody who hated him more, either, as the sole source of all discord in the family. As if a child's birth could create the kind of violence and schism through a marriage that Hunter had experienced when he went back in his memory as far as he could go, if he dared to go there.
Hunter's father showed up on his doorstep that morning, and eight hours later Hunter was breaking into the one business that he knew was not occupied at night, that was certain to have cash in its drawer. Thanks to the rumors, Hunter knew that the arts and crafts store had sold a whole bunch of cards so the old women could take a look at the sheriff selling them. Hunter didn't have more than fifty dollars to his name. He would take whatever would send his father back into the Godforsaken woods, and if a few hundred dollars would do that, then Hunter would get it.
He broke a back window, unlatched a window, and moved through the quiet place without a problem, breaking open the cash register with a screwdriver. He didn't bother with a mask.
