Re: Island Adventure: Abe & Sasha
"At that point, I don't think it's a vacation anymore. Humans aren't like cats. They can't sleep and eat all day to be satisfied." He imagined the relief of the family members who released their old people to sea. "I think I remember reading a fable like that." Abe searched his memory for the old tale. "Something about- when the elderly becomes useless in a tribe, they're sent off to trek into the woods. But, I wonder how many of those elderly simply found a way to live out there because they weren't finished yet?" He smiled. "Did any of the senior citizens jump ship? Become pirates? Vanish on one of the shores? There had to be at least one wily old fart."
The most difficult thing about being a mind reader was hearing things that could never be commented on. He could tease her about the grab-bag of things she was trying to think of to avoid thinking about him, but that was unfair and broke a certain amount of trust in his mind. And, if he could find a way to block himself from looking through the keyhole of her mind, he liked to think he'd try. That said, he couldn't help but feel curious. Holding her hand made the process easier, he could see the things she was popping into her head like bubblegum. Under the Tony Hawk sick tricks was this fear, like a body was buried under the pool. A fear- of him? Fear of what he would see.
That meant they were back to the beginning- mind reading was bad for everyone.
"Did you get us lost?" Abe asked, wading towards a shallow era and checking to see that it was just sand before sitting down with a splash. "Is this the part where you take one of my kidneys?" He imagined her having some organ pirates waiting in the wings to cut him open. Well, that was the fate of a fish, anyway. "I think it might be faster if I try and get a read. Did you bring the rattle? It might help me." He slapped the wet sand next to him. "Come, sit."
