Re: [Motel Roof]
For Kin, who had never left the East Coast until roughly three months ago and had considered New England to be a long road trip, her own accent wasn't something she was proud of. It made her stick out, linked her to her home city to the point where she had been trying to curb it and so she might have been a little jealous that he wore his home so easily in his voice.
She held up her bowl as if in acknowledgement of the comment, "I'm cold all the time anyway." It was a poor explanation but it was better than saying she was going stir crazy with so little to do and such a small place and was feeling lost in her life with no purpose. It was also true, she was chronically cold, anemia a nice old lady at the thrift store suggested, to which Kin had rolled her eyes.
"I didn't see you coming, or hear you." It was a quick counter to his argument, but she stood with her bowl still and took another bite as she took practiced steps towards the edge with him. After all, what was the worst that could happen if she fell?
Hard to tell if it was the cats comment, him completely embracing his obviously unstable mind and the unusual situation or his alien openness with a complete stranger but she found herself laughing, "Me too." She didn't elaborate on if she meant moving to repose or not knowing why she was there, "So what are the odds your batshit self is going to do something stupid up here?" It was a casual question, like no matter what his answer what it wouldn't alarm her.
Her eyes narrowed at the question, fork halfway to her bowl as if she were assessing him. The boy's tone had no guile behind it, didn't smell or sound like the eagerness of someone who thought they were about to hit on a secret they thought they could reap the profits of somehow. There was a reek to that sort, one she had worn herself, "Isn't my skin these days I've been told." She finally remarked with an undertone of resentment, face twisting into an unintentional snarl before redirecting her attention to the skyline, "Coming for you because you're crazy, or because something you did?" Because of what you are, or because of a choice you made was the real question.
