Re: The Lake; Briar and Newt
It was a mercy that her folk were able to blend in with mortals so easy, being unable to resist certain things as they were. Even if it would have gotten them killed quickly there would have come a point where they wouldn't have been able to resist the advancements man would make and then where would they be? A footnote in history, hardly remembered by any. Granted, when she shrank she looked a bit less like the friendly neighborhood mechanic but it was a moot point by then wasn't it?
Briar perked up, looking a bit pleased and unintentionally so that their deeds--morbid though they were--had spread to the different communities. Although that could be bad seeing as her kind weren't exactly thought of fondly like damned wish granting fairies but still. She took another drag on her cigarette but returned his infectious smile, she had to give the boy that; physically intimidating he was not but he was also hard to stay angry at.
It was also entirely possible she resonated with the glee he showed upon his 'discovery', same as she did upon a new facet of engineering. Briar found it amusing that he wasn't able to stay locked on her face, was he unnerved by her? Surely not! Now her mother had said that her features had always shinned like a cousin of the fae should but Briar had attributed that to vanity on her part. Out of curiosity and a love of poking people when they were uncomfortable she pivoted a bit so she was facing him more directly and a bit more in the light of the moon.
"As a species you mean?" It's okay to say it, it wouldn't bother her, "I mean, my branch is Irish, I don't know if you're familiar with Irish, but it's a form of Gaelic and good luck digging into it because it's not an easy language. I guess we probably had a name with them though?" She waved a hand in casual dismissal, history was never her passion, "The 1760's were a long time ago, I was born during the war, I grew up thinking of myself as a Gremlin and I like it." Briar tilted her head to the side, "What's it to you anyway? Why're you so nosy if I'm not trying to kill you?"
