Re: Military lockdown: Cat & Matt
"You never listen." That, at least, was easy enough to agree with. He was stubborn, and he insisted on banging his head over and over, and she knew that was never going to change. He was too emotional, and that was coming from someone very emotional, but her time in the docha had taught her to keep that emotion under the surface. Well, growing up in the slums and under the thumbs of the Russians, that hadn't hurt either. But she knew when to fight, and she knew when it was better to wait. Sometimes a win? Required a very long con, and a very long con? Required not showing your cards.
And she chuckled at his apology. "Really? Living with a pretty woman is trying to do some good for a change? I'll remember that," and her grin was wry, because Cat didn't trust men with women. Blame her youth, or blame her adulthood, but trusting men? Just wasn't something she did well. Not that Matt owed her anything. But Cat could wait for months and months without contact, entirely silent, but she would take note. She had taken note.
"You could've seen what they had without doing it this way, but you don't listen," she repeated. And of course they had everything, and that couldn't be surprising, could it? But none of that mattered now, not really. He'd painted himself in a corner, and he'd narrowed his choices down to two, and that was simply the reality of the situation. Best to deal in realities, Cat thought.
Once her weapons were all locked away, she moved close to the bars, and she chuckled about them fixing it. "Alright, if that's what they promised. All I know? Is that you get to leave this cell, but only if you agree to join us. You've done too much to get off otherwise. You must know that." Which meant, Cat knew, that they couldn't reprogram him entirely. There needed to be a way to keep him in line, to keep him from going rogue at the first opportunity. Maybe they thought McRory could do that for them, but she had no clue. She hadn't asked McRory about his terms for this new position of Captain. Why bother? She was an assassin and nothing more.
