Re: Newspaper office: Cat/Jack
[Cat didn't associate wealth with dust and moldering, that was true. The Wainrights, for example, were very old money, but they had flawless servants, and they always looked perfect. Well, she assumed. She'd only known Bruce's parents from newspapers and magazines, but their son certainty took impeccable to extremes when he wished to. But they were talking about staff and publications, and she scoffed.] Please. We're under an hour away from one of the biggest cities in the country. I find it difficult to believe you couldn't lure staff here. After all, those mansions on the lake? They're there because people commute. There's money to be made in this town, Jack, if only you weren't so very scared to go out on a limb and try to make it.
[She rolled her eyes at his comment about her reading habits. The truth was, simply, she hadn't picked up a book since Steve. Probably telling, but Cat had a very difficult time ignoring her own tells.] School and reading aren't the same thing. Anyway, everyone needs a guilty pleasure. Mine comes with a cracked spine and curling pages. [She held out her hand for the whiskey, and she sloshed the golden liquid in the glass. She chuckled.] Tea. Of course it's tea.
[But Cat was just fine with her whiskey, thanks, even with the questionable clarity and questionable glass. She took one long swallow, and she watched him.] Alright, so you won't do it. Good to know. Maybe I'll fund an alternate paper, one that actually prints stories. [She grinned, taken with the idea, and she lifted the glass to her lips again.] One that doesn't willfully ignore facts in favor of advertisements and fluff pieces on Gladys' new hairstyle or the unfortunate passing of Nana's Jack Russell. [She took another sip, and she smiled over the lip of her glass.] When all the computers in town are hijacked and threaten to explode? That's a little hard to require additional credibility for. I just think it requires balls, and this little establishment? [She motioned around the room with her glass.] Is woefully lacking in balls.
