Your brain totally thinks that nervousness equals danger, and that you might need to get out of a situation quickly, so it releases adrenaline, in order to assist with flight. Your heart beats faster, in order to pump more oxygen to your lungs and muscles, but your stomach isn't considered cruicial to survival instinct, so less blood pumps to it, and that results in the sensation of butterflies in your stomach.
