Re: [Sharon and Cat having a drink or ten]
Cat watched Sharon lower that glass, and she watched the blonde woman's fingers shake. Now, Sharon? Sharon was tough, and that tremble of fingers steeled Cat for the fact that whatever was about to come out of the other woman's mouth? Wasn't going to be good. It wasn't going to be your standard snatched baby story either. Well, nothing was every easy or simple, and why should that change now? Cat took a sip of her own drink for fortification, and then she set the glass on the shiny wood. And, somehow, the throbbing in her thigh seemed less important just then.
"Not a librarian from Bethesda. Good start." Repeated. Because Cat hadn't doubted that story, and now she wondered if that was willful ignorance. Willful ignorance was something Cat could be very good at if she wanted to.
And the rest of Sharon's story? It was probably a testament to Cat's returning memories, but it seemed completely normal, believable, even likely. The government, the main branch of the government, was extremely anti-enhanced citizens - at least on paper. Oh, they made notable exceptions, but only when it suited them, and only in the name of safety. They didn't create enhanced people, at least that seemed to be true. But children? That seemed too risky, even for them, which made Cat immediately sure it was a side group with some private agenda. Washington was drowning in those, and it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.
She took another sip of her drink.
"The government wouldn't be able to hold children without fear of it getting out. Adults working for them? Me? That's fine, but children?" She shook her head. "The only reason I can see them holding them is if they can prove they're legitimate risks. Otherwise? You're probably dealing with a cell, kitten. And cells are hard to track. Especially if they're good, and they sound like they are." She rubbed between her eyes. "I'll poke around quietly. But if these people are science facility affiliated? Then we have no jurisdiction, Sharon." And, of course, Sharon being lured to Repose? That was sketchy too. "Has the government approached you about this team they're putting together? Well, not the government exactly. It's a side project in the Commander's hands, but it's sanctioned."
