He hummed in understanding. "Some aren't meant for company," he said. This wasn't the military. Ranks were mutable, and not so terribly fixed, tied not to titles but to tangible benefits. Thinking about fixed and unchanging places in the grand scheme of things, though, that made his mind wander. "The great chain of being," he said. "Now there's one of the better lies I ever heard told."
Mason looked back at Janus when he noted there were no fixed places, and he took the comment the way it was meant. Out of context, some might have interpreted it as a threat, despite what he'd just said, all that business about being too much of a loner to want to deal with getting a promotion.
"It never was," he said. "Or it always was. Guess that's the question."
A moment's quiet, and then he rolled one shoulder, winced as it cracked. "You know what I like?" he asked, canting his head to the side. "Getting tired. Sleeping. Now that, sleep, that's a novelty worth keeping."
