Lucifer, Morningstar, was typically depicted as male in the annals of men, just as they made God in man's image, not the other way round. But Mason was no more male than he was female. He had his preferences, and his chosen pronouns, but they were a convenience of language, not a definition of spirit.
And anyway: "I've seen every kind of human shape. None much change my opinion of the soul in the flesh." He sucked on the cigarette, tasted the acrid tobacco in the smoke without the fire or the tar. Then, without preamble, he changed the subject.
"You feel settled here, Janus?" he asked, warm eyes, kindly. "Make some friends?"
