He watched the fiery rim around the edge of Janus' eyes, sparking and encircling. "You don't think so?" he asked. Nothing about him changed in Janus' presence, for his part. He was terrifically ordinary, handsome but with the edge taken off by care. Something bad had befallen the preacher before his current occupant ever arrived.
"I disagree. It's like a merry-go-round of every thing who doesn't want to be found out as less than ordinary, and every odd phenomena that accompanies such individuals." He slid his fingers through the handle of the mug. "All in one place. More than in most cities of a million or more. That's got some meaning to it, I feel."
Was that why he was here? It wasn't possible to say. It could have been an idle observation, or only the spark point of interest in this miniscule scrap of humanity in the woods. "I don't micromanage," he said. "You know that."
