log: hospital - sam/louis
Louis was glad to see Sam, whatever the circumstances. After the baby was born, when he last visited the Capital, he was only able to congratulate her and worry. He knew he hadn't been seeing her as often as a good brother ought to, either, as much as he ordinarily would before he came to Repose. Case in point - he should have known she'd gone back on heroin while she was pregnant. That was something he'd be kicking himself over for a good long while.
But his primary concern was whether the stint in the hospital had treated her well. He'd most likely never say it out loud ever again, but he still wondered if Cris and Sam weren't bad for each other. They loved each other, obviously, and he loved them both, but they were both messy in individual ways that didn't seem to mesh. The last time he'd dared to bring it up he'd found himself at a pizza parlor watching them have a lovely time to make a point. No doubt if he tried again, Sam would blow it off and Cris would be angry. And now there was a baby to think of.
He tried to stay optimistic. Maybe going forward they could lean on each other. He tried not to worry about how children made things harder for couples. Maybe that wouldn't be the case here, and they would construct something lasting. Thinking about the two of them taking the baby home made his stomach sink a little, but he wanted the most hopeful version of it. A happy home for his sister and his friend would mean a great deal to everyone who cared about them. It was a thin hope, but he wasn't willing to give it up, even in the face of overwhelming evidence that Cris wasn't doing well and Sam was just barely starting to crest out of her own troubles, and now an infant was being thrown into the mix.
As for Daniel - he wasn't even thinking about him, and certainly wasn't thinking about avoiding the subject of him. Truly. He was glad to leave Daniel as a problem back in Repose. Sam was his focus today. He couldn't worry about his romantic life, or lack thereof, when he went to visit his sister and her premature baby in rehab. Hee wasn't a self-centered idiot - and, anyway, there were just too many things to worry about, and prioritizing kept him marginally sane.
Louis walked up before Sam had a chance to finish her cigarette, after parking in the hospital's massive, labyrinthine structure. No doubt he'd forget where he left his car before long - he hadn't been sleeping terrible well, and that never helped anything. But he looked healthy and chipper enough, if a little bit weary. With Oliver at Sonrisa, all the dreary hours at the desk were down to him, which meant he'd been catching up on his reading like no one's business. "Sam," he said, once close enough. "It's so good to see you."
He hugged her. He was getting better at that these days, something he'd never done with his siblings growing up. He was actually starting to find it somewhat natural - what an achievement. He gave her a tight squeeze before releasing her. There was a plastic bag in his left hand, just like the last time he'd come, and he hefted it. "Food," he said, with a small smile. "Thought it couldn't hurt, anyway." She looked good. Healthier, happier than she had the last time he was here. That was enough to pin a hope on.
