Re: [Carnival: Hannah & Zoe]
Roles. Day in and out, in and out, in and out, and she found few people allowed her to just be, and few people listened to the things she said she wanted. They had their own ideas, and these ideas were irrefutable truth to them, and the words she uttered hardly mattered. But this woman was not one of those men, and she maybe wasn't like the women who did the same. She was nodding, the girl, Zoe, and Hannah smiled at her, watching as the girl's eyes went saucer-wide as they neared the tent. And Hannah didn't need to see the tent to know they were nearing it. She could hear the people behind her, the crowd gathered outside to watch the spectacle, and she nodded her own nod when Zoe thanked her. "You're welcome," she said, polite, and she'd learned a few things about politeness along the line. She'd never been good at galas or events, but she'd gotten better with time, and her lost smile was a thing learned beneath glittering lights.
"Mine too," she said about the fairs that came to Palm Beach. But... "But our fair was big. It was so, so big, and you would get tired walking from one side to the other. Nights were best, because you would see all the lights glowing, and the metal of the rides would complain, and I kind of liked being scared," she admitted, remembering, and all those days seemed so very far away.
She turned when they were so near to the tent that she thought she might be able to feel the heat of the flames on her skin, and she looked over at Zoe as the spectacle continued. "Rooted where? Here?" she asked, though she didn't think Zoe meant that, not precisely, and she grabbed the girl's fingers again, tug, tug, this way. "We can go in the back and watch from there," she suggested, letting Zoe's hand go once the words were spoken. "It'll be really crowded for the next one, and the view won't be nearly as good," she promised, knowing, and the performers were in smaller tents around the back, and Hannah headed in that direction.
