Re: Woods: Holly and Rafe
Other timelines and their existence actually would have given Rafe pause, in truth. That was the sort of thing reserved for science fiction, books and movies and television shows that loved to twist the audience's mind into so many knots that by the end they couldn't tell which way was up. That wasn't reality. The irony of someone who could literally turn into a wolf wouldn't have been lost to him if someone laid it out for him either, but there were limits. There had to be. Didn't there?
The possibility that Audrey had been converted into some kind of spy wasn't a terrible one but it also didn't make a whole lot of sense to Rafe, as he showed in the furrow of his brow and the downward turn of his mouth. He added the slightest shake of his head for good measure, turning his eyes down to the dirt again. Not a spy, at least not exactly. Maybe Holly was touching on something resembling a truth though, or at least a version of it, so it wasn't something that Rafe would outright dismiss.
When Holly looked his way Rafe was ready to meet his gaze. That knowing expression that Holly was wearing was mirrored right back at him, and freely so. The more time Rafe spent in the other man's company, the more certain he became that there really was more to Holly than met the eye. It was liberating in a way, the freedom to be in any way open about the supernatural and its existence. Still, Rafe knew to be careful. There was definitely a line that he shouldn't cross and he was keeping himself very much aware of it and how close he came to brushing up against it. "Something took her," Rafe echoed, following suit in straightening and taking yet another look at what dirt remained on his fingers. "And something, presumably that same something, brought her back. Or sent her back." He looked at Holly again. "Whatever the reason for it, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to keep an eye on her." Rafe didn't know the young woman well enough to gauge how she was behaving and if it was any different than how she had been before but-- "It's entirely possibly the memory loss is a cover of some kind." And it would be a good one too. How better to explain uncharacteristic behaviour than shrugging it all off as amnesia? Convenient and easy enough to fake.
Or maybe Rafe was just letting his imagination run away with him now. But probably not. His gut said otherwise.
