She went silent as he spoke. Maybe she was crawling back inside, maybe she just kept taking wrong turns, or perhaps she was stuck, whatever it was Audrey retreated back into the quiet. She wasn't crying, she wasn't choking or hiccuping. She was watching the lights pass them by and not recognizing a single thing that she saw. The buildings were blank canvases and she couldn't form anything on them.
Holly. They weren't friends. Noah. They were friends. Noah was his husband? The sentence made sense, but she didn't take comfort in it. Maybe before, when the world wasn't a giant unknown monster she would have, maybe it meant something then.
The hospital was coming up, and she felt this wave of deeper uncertainty setting off the nausea in her stomach and her arms wrapped about herself among the dirt and dried blood and whatever that smell was.
"Scared." Was all she uttered as they drew closer.
