Re: Dietre A./Hugh C.: On the patio
The song made up for the silence between them. There was something about the woman’s voice that got into your head and made you listen. Dietre liked how there wasn’t much instrumental background getting in the way of it, he could focus on the lyrics. There was a wistfulness that spoke to him and steered his line of thinking into a particular direction. Love and possibilities and regrets.
Having to leave right after breakfast was a regret. Dietre felt his life was too full of regrets. Thinking about them inevitably brought to mind Liam and all the things he wished he hadn’t done and all the things he wished he had but didn’t. There was one thing in particular he found himself mulling over on the way back to Adrian’s place, and by the time they arrived he made his decision over if he’d allow it to be a regret with Hugh too. The problem was the how and when of it, and if he’d recognize the time when it came.
Parked in front of the house, Dietre bit his lip and turned to Hugh. He didn’t know what to say and felt himself descend into awkwardness. “Um… Well. Thank you again for having me over, Hugh. I had a good time…” Should he invite him inside? He couldn’t think of an excuse, he had nothing really to offer as they had just eaten and he figured Hugh would want to go back home and clean up.
