Re: Dietre A./Hugh C.: On the patio
Kindness would always be Dietre’s undoing, the stuff that held him together had a way of becoming unglued when he was subjected to it. His lip trembled and his expression crumbled when Hugh’s arm went around him. A few tears made their way down his cheeks, but he did not fall completely apart, he just took a couple of deep shaky breaths and wiped at his face before going on.
“I know… I know... I still wish I hadn’t listened to him, you know, just kept talking to him…” At the time it had seemed like the right thing to do. Dietre knew he could be hard to deal with when he was spiralling, being obsessive and overly insecure. He thought that he wasn’t as bad as he had been back then, ignoring what happened after Aleksi left. He was better now, but it came too late to help Liam.
As if he read Hugh’s mind, “It was hard to come here the first few times. I keep wondering if I’ll see him… But I haven’t.” He sniffed once, then brought his water to his lips in an effort to wash away the lump in his throat. After swallowing a few mouthfuls he felt a little better.
“Anyway… I just felt like I had to tell you.” He leaned into Hugh, soaking in the comfort radiating from him. “I’m sorry your last memory of the night will be of me crying all over you.” If Hugh had a piano Dietre would have offered to play him something so he could end the night giving the man a more positive view of him.
