Re: LIVING ROOM (Near the fireplace): Hugh C./Rafe J.
Sometimes calling someone simply an old friend wasn't doing them justice. That seemed to be the case with Zee for Hugh, and in all honesty that was definitely the case with Aubrey for Rafe as well. But calling the other man simply an old friend had kept things from getting messy in what was otherwise a perfectly pleasant and civilised environment. There had been a time when his and Aubrey's friendship had been straightforward, two men coming together and forging a bond that would surely withstand anything life could throw at it, even in such harrowing and horrific surroundings as they had so often found themselves in. Life, however, had thrown them one hell of a curve ball in the form of that godforsaken warlord who had been anything but human, and any semblance of simplicity in his and Aubrey's relationship with and to one another had gone out the window. Well and truly.
Now? Rafe didn't know what they were to one another, but one thing he did know, with unwavering certainty, was that he would still lay down his life for Aubrey Rois, and without hesitation.
Some things never changed, even if everything else around them did.
"I haven't," Rafe said to Hugh once the other man was done with his explanation of how he and the woman in question had met. He took a glance around. "At least not that I know of." He offered Hugh a small smile. He hadn't spoken with anyone who had introduced themselves by such a distinct name anyway and he wouldn't have missed something like that. The wolf was more interested in an individual's scent than their name, of course, but Rafe would do that part well enough for the both of them. After taking another sip of his increasingly dwindling drink he met Hugh's gaze and said, "It sounds like we both need to work on the whole staying in touch thing. That's how it was with my old friend as well."
Well, technically, it was a heck of a lot more than that, but he was keeping things simple.
