She was in the kitchen, humming to herself while kneading bread, using the last bits of gifted grains from Manning's sister to create something for her family. The girls were in the living room, open to the kitchen so that she could watch over them as she worked, smiling to see the way TJ played, gentle with her sisters, her words mixing with laughter and sounds that aren't yet words.
It wasn't the first time in her life that she'd experienced something that had picked her up and placed her, unwilling, into the shoes and thoughts of another. Experience didn't make it any easier, especially when the emotions were so overwhelming. For long moments, she was caught in the tidal wave of anger and rage, and when the memory finally let her go, the dough she'd been kneading was squeezed tightly through her fingers, the way children squeeze at play-doh to see the shapes it makes. The lingering memory was far from anything childish though, and the anger still clung to her thoughts.
She looked at her daughters, playing happily and safely in their home, and was struck with the comparison: what she would do if someone attempted - or even succeeded - to hurt them. It did nothing to tamp down the rage, instead making things crystal clear and sharp edged.
The forge, the hunting, the hammer, the storm…
She breathed deeply, cleaning dough and flour from her hands as quickly as possible. "TJ? Watch your sisters for a little, okay? I have to go find Papa…" The little girl looked over and smiled as she nodded, and Iris slipped out of the kitchen in a hurry to search the house for Manning.
