Re: [Above Webster's, in Daniel's place: Hannah & Daniel, + Si.]
Si ignored his sister's loud protests. He didn't want to look at the man now standing from the table. Something about the way he moved worked old memories in Si's psyche. In a belated processing of her sentiment that she and this man were dead, Si could believe it. He set Si's teeth on edge, the way the malicious specters of the house had done. And as much for his sake as Amy's, he had to get the fuck out of there.—But, right, at least the guy was polite. Si would've left it at that. He would've let Amy and Daniel have their goodbyes over his shoulder and he would've gone.
But, then the man was right there, behind Si, and all of the hair on the back of his neck stood. Every part of Si wanted him to scream and make noise so someone would come rescue him from the belly of the beast. He wanted to lash out as he tried to crawl away. He managed not to make a sound, but it was only because he was clenching his teeth hard enough to hurt. His breath came out ragged through his nose and he didn't look back as a sweat broke out across his forehead. He took the stairs, first seven, then the next five. He didn't take another breath until he got them out of the godforsaken building and into the car haphazardly parked outside.
