Re: Livingroom: Marta / Seven
She could see it on his face, and though so many other moments passed by without her able to tell what he was thinking anymore, it wasn't exactly hard to know that whatever he was feeling at the moment wasn't anything good at all. In another time, she would've reached out a hand toward him to try for some sort of comfort, but she kept her arms held in close to her body.
His gaze wandered, like he wanted to be anywhere but talking to her at the moment, and it made her ease her weight back, putting half a step of space between them. And then another, angling herself off to the side so that he could... escape. If he wanted to. Without having to push past her or go through her. And the truth was, she didn't want to argue with him. Even though it seemed that everything between them since that night she could barely remember at the motel, always ended in an argument. Usually with her not able to deal with everything she ended up feeling, and needing a way for it all to come out. Most often in yelling, or whatever the text equivalent ended up being.
But this time, she didn't want to go crashing over that line. And only partly because they were at a party - she didn't want it to keep being like that. So while her fist stayed clenched around that ball of brownie and napkin, she took a few seconds to absorb his incredulous look, trying to let it move over her instead of knocking her down. And yeah, the next breath she took stuttered a little and it took an extra bit of effort to reply, but she kept her voice quiet enough that she wouldn't be heard by anyone else, over the music.
"I don't know what to think. Okay?" A little shake of her head as she looked down. "I know that... before... you wouldn't. I know here-" the fingertips of her free hand pressed hard beneath her sternum. "That you wouldn't now. But in my mind...?" After a second she looked back up again with a deeper breath and a quicker shake of her head, like she was trying to settle her thoughts back into order. "Of course. What are the rules?"
