Hugh handed back over Theodore's letter, and set the gift down on the entry table before turning back to Theodore. "I had wondered if she would be," he said lightly, "I'm sure you'll manage though and you'll enjoy being nearer to her for the remainder of this year, I know."
The smile faltered, because no matter how much Hugh wanted to just be supportive, it was a reminder that in being nearer Elaine Theodore wouldn't be here.
"I hope that I'm not rid of you for good," Hugh managed to pull a laugh up. "I'd be most put out if someone terrible moved into your cottage," he turned more serious as his gaze settled on Theodore's face. "I'm not ashamed to say that I will miss you terribly. You've..." he hesitated. He didn't want to be over-dramatic, or over-state anything, but. He bit his lip and finally settled on: "A friend like you is rare, and I'm very grateful that we met and I wish you every good thing in this position. You deserve that. Um," he glanced at the whiskey. "I could open this, if you have time?"
