Re: Boathouse: Hugh & Atticus
"Good answer. Have found, through the years, that people get overly caught up in finding love like the type in books. Always enjoyed the books without love stories best. Not that I have anything against love, but don't like the fixation on it to the exclusion of other things," he said. Was something he hadn't actually thought about much, but his taste in fiction wasn't particularly romantic. Liked his friendships to be intellectual and based on good conversation, good communication. Wasn't implying love couldn't be that way, but thought so many people didn't look for a friend in a lover. Was a mistake, to his way of thinking. "Would rather have a life filled with importance, and a partner if they come. Confidants if they come. But think sometimes people focus so much on finding a lover that they forget it has to be someone they're willing to talk to daily, for the rest of their lives. Assuming we're still being that traditional."
Thought about dreams. Could see where the particular situation Hugh described could be invasive. Thought a moment longer. "If I'm understanding correctly, someone else basically stepped in to the place someone else occupied in the dream? Would find that disturbing." Wasn't the same as becoming someone else for a night. Could see where that would foster intimacy that wasn't consented to. Put aside his cup. "Think people want to be in control. Think you're right. Think we walk through life with this illusion that we are in control. Haven't ever thought that, so maybe these things don't bother me as much. Am fully aware I control nothing." Sounded at ease with that, a man who had come to understand his place in his world. Accepted it. Didn't fight the tide. Found a way to row more easily within it.
