Charles was choosing to not participate in the speculation. He wasn't a man who worked on speculation. Once facts started to emerge then he'd start to pay attention, but for now he was keeping his head down. He didn't need trouble, he didn't need his name getting around.
Perhaps it's the brightness of the clothing that drew his attention to the girl approaching him, permeating his rather shadowy bubble, but he looked up from the deep wood of the bar.
His head turned, then his body (though just slightly, she was small, he was a rather more imposing figure). Outside of the fashion choices, Charles' attention was drawn immediately to the bruise under her eye. Even if she was a stranger, it made his blood run hot. He had no problem with shooting a man dead for a wrong word, but women shouldn't get hurt.
