Blink. He hadn't expected that interest. A moment. Janus was not happy at having to speak about himself this way. He hated it, especially when he felt obliged to tell the truth. He scowled.
"I tangled with a kind of... monster. Nightmare given life. Nasty." The demon searched his coat pockets, breast pocket, inside breast pocket, and eventually fished out a packet of cigarettes. He started tapping the box upside down, perhaps a little too vigorously. "Anyway. I came out of it weaker. I looked bad, a lot younger. He looked at me different. Like you talk about Billy. Made me absolutely fucking crazy. You can't fall in love with somebody you feel sorry for. That Florence Nightingale stuff, that's bullshit. Nobody comes out the other side of it happy." He paused to take a breath, and a cigarette still hadn't come out of the box.
