What would she say? No? That was hardly likely.] Why are you here? [Her voice started to inch up, to go tighter and desperate. Intensity that she tried to pull back again, to curl into herself, arms wrapped around her waist. One snuck out again to press shaking fingers against her forehead, her breath shuddering out.] I have to get back. [It was a plea, layers of emotion beneath it. And softer:] I can't be gone.
