I think it is exactly how to describe it. I don't think it's necessarily the length of the relationship, at least not in full, but also the intensity of the feeling that can cause that sort of thing. But when you spend so much time together, the memories do pile up.
We really should set our sights on minor ones, I agree.
You're entirely justified in that feeling, whatever caused it. Parents can do a lot of damage to their children without realizing it. When I was young, there were times I worried so much about doing or saying the wrong thing with Elaine and somehow damage her. And the only way forward was to just approach everything with love. Maybe not the secret of life or even good parenting - I'm absolutely a pushover when it comes to her. But I think she's turned out all right, so I must have hit on something.
