Re: On a Fire Escape; Alex W/extra extra
"That's cool," Alex said, with a tired grin. How late was it, anyway? "I'd be happy to show ya 'round the place a little, maybe we can find a series you like, something to kill a little time while you're here in town." He'd been introduced to a lot of cool stuff since he'd started there, but that wasn't why the smile, the fondness in his tone. It was the people he'd met, who had accepted him, who had opened up their arms and a little bit of their lives to him. It was the friendships, the belonging. Damn Tandy and his Maslow shit, and god love 'em both.
"A ranch? I worked on a ranch in Montana for a coupla weeks," Alex told him. "Mostly feedin' animals and stuff. It was hard work, an' they couldn't keep me on, but..." He hadn't really wanted to stay. It was too close to home, too close to someone who could find him if they started looking, and he hadn't wanted to be found. "It was real pretty. Big open spaces, big blue sky...they call it Big Sky Country out there, least that's what the license plates say. And the baby cows were real cute," he said, taking another drag of the cigarette. "If you like that sorta thing, that's definitely the life for you. I...like havin' people around. Not too many or I'd have gone to the Capital or something. Place like this, it's...it's right for me."
