Re: On a Fire Escape; Alex W/extra extra
A shop boy then, so not probably going to be helpful to the cause. But that was alright. He didn't begrudge anyone a different type of job, he just wanted to see the newsies he worked with have a better life before he left them. Maybe he'd be a shopboy one day, but that seemed less likely - what he really wanted, more than anything, was freedom. And if he were going south and west, then he'd go to Santa Fe, and find something there that let him be his own man. He took a draw on the cigarette and then tapped the ash off.
"Comics are those ones with the pictures and the text yeah? Like they have in the papes sometimes?" He didn't do a lot of reading, but he could read. It was more time and proximity to books or texts that kept him from doing much reading. "They always look like fun to work with. You wanna keep doing that forever then? Me. I'm doin' this strike for the others. We'll get them so they can get paid well enough, and then I'm headed west to Santa Fe. There's nobody there that can hold me down."
It almost felt at times as if he'd come here thinking there was nobody here that could hold him down, but obviously that hadn't been true. It was Santa Fe still that he needed.
