Alex locked the door and flipped the keys into his pocket, the foam headphones of his Walkman already cupping his ears, Cyndi Lauper already crooning, scratchy and uneven, into his ears as he set off into the night. With summer in full and vengeful effect, he'd finally discarded his nearly ever-present hoodie, opting instead for a thrift-store yellow t-shirt which proudly advertised "WEBB ELECTRIC" in bold black letters, wherever and whatever that was.
Most of the other businesses seemed to be shuttered for the night, and it was clear the town was pretty much done for the evening as a whole, and so was Alex. It had been a long day at the shop as kids had streamed in and out for most of the day, clearly understanding that their days of summer freedom were growing shorter in number. Alex didn't mind; he'd seen a couple familiar faces from story time at the Crisis Center, and it made him feel a different kind of warm inside. This place was changing him. Had already changed him.
He walked along under the street lamps, softly singing along with Cyndi. If you're lost you can look, and you will find me.... He hadn't lied when he told Ren that he wasn't about to go up on stage and sing anything, but that didn't mean he didn't enjoy it as an act unto itself, even if his voice was really too uneven to actually be pleasant. As he walked, he tried to feel out that Weird Repose Energy, but even after dark on a Saturday night, it didn't strike him as anything but a town that was ready for bed. He stopped the tape and draped the headphones around his neck instead, just quiet as he walked, listening. Maybe he would feel it then. Was that a footstep? A deeper shadow, looming within another, over there? Well, that was an easy way to freak himself out if he wanted; he'd made this walk, at night, dozens of times in the past few months. He chuckled to himself. It was just a town.
