Re: FT: Atticus M/Steve M
Things will never be the same, but, that's always true. And for better, as much as worse. [Steve had lived through enough eras to know. Progressing forward usually had its perks, even if you lost some of the little things and even if it took some getting used to. Not that he was delivering some kind of lecture. Some people took Steve's way of talking as a talking-to. Sometimes it was. But, usually, it wasn't. Like Atticus' slow shipping, sometimes he missed the old days of straighter talking—at least among those he spent time with. But, most of the time, he could be glad of the fact that more care was taken, because it tended to let those who might not otherwise get a word in edgewise, have some room.
Which is all off-topic.
Steve nodded, unseen by the camera or Atticus, at the question posed. But, then there was talk of Skaneateles. He laughed, recognizing the name.] I know about where it is, but that's it. [Steve was a city kid at heart.] No wonder you like the island. It probably felt real because you could walk down the street. For you, right now, this is essentially a film. [Steve panned the camera, coming ever nearer to the tiny center of Repose. The camera passed over the front of the general store, then showed the street, the movie theater.] We had a date there. [He chuckled. The camera didn't flip back to him. Atticus changed the topic—returned it—and Steve let him.] I won't say I've never wished I was a numb. I have. But, I'm not. I am different. [Than he once was. Of course.] But, like I said, everything changes. I guess you can tell me if you think if it's for better or worse.
