Oddly, this is a fact that has been presented to me a number of times throughout my life. Usually when I mention my family roots, someone will bring up that Shakespeare sounded more like modern day Americans than British-English. But it still seems like a really quick turnaround from Chaucer's manner of writing, to Shakespeare, to modern English. It's fascinating.
