A large number of men in this country and this century were taller than Daniel, who had never been a towering menace to begin with. He didn't have a lot of leverage, therefore, but strength anyway. His worry was sharpening quickly to acidic fear as his dark eyes stared intently into the boy's face. "How can you tell he's okay if you have not seen him? Can you be sure?" Daniel pressed his fingers into the shoulder a little bit, not enough to make anything rattle, but rather the way cats kneaded blankets. He cast a suspicious glance over Noah's shoulder, as the worry for Holly mixed with an older paranoia of what happened outside his door. He tried to draw Noah a little farther inside the room, taking a step back.
