Re: Hannah & Jeremiah; Jester's Court
He didn't reach up to touch her face, although his jaw leaned into her touch, and he wanted to. He wanted to pull himself in, and maybe it would have been better to do this confession in his house, in his bed, where he could pull in close to her, and talk through all of it more intentionally. On the other hand, maybe it was better here. There was no escape, not without throwing himself over the edge of the carriage. If she'd been horrified, he would have had to see it through to the end anyway, but this wasn't horror, or at least it didn't seem to be. Curiosity maybe, and Hannah was frequently nothing if not curious. And perhaps because he knew something of her, there was an understanding that maybe she wouldn't be horrified.
"It wasn't a direct line," he managed, with what was almost a laugh. The Ferris Wheel had nothing to do with the jail, not really. It had just been one event at the beginning of a summer, that had been bookended by another event at the end - and that event had been the arrest... the trial had come after. "It was more, that the Ferris Wheel I remember at the beginning of things, and the arrest at the end. And the arrest had nothing to do with her... except that she didn't want anything to do with me after."
Which was reasonable. And maybe even not directly related to the arrest.
"The trial is done. I finished it before I came here," he sighed, lightly, looking past her into the night sky, towards the shadows on the ground. "I was... there was a murder," he turned back to her. "I didn't kill anyone, but they thought I was involved. There were technicalities, nothing could be proven, the jury couldn't convict me. I'm not exactly a perfect Prince for you, Hannah - but I like being your Prince." Even if it was just for tonight.
