He grinned in a lopsided way he knew to be winning. He wanted to make a good impression - he wanted to be more than a collection of bad or good memories. It would be nice to convince somebody that he could be personable and had his life together, and it would be even better if that person knew him, even just a little. Lou seemed like the type of person it would be good to be liked by, since he had already decided he liked her.
He'd been ordering with numbers off the menu and he waved a hand. "Barbecue unagi and a black rice spicy tuna roll, I'm not going easy on you. And bulgogi is really good marinated beef. I didn't want you to have to go without."
"Life's good," he said. It was a casual white lie, the kind of ant catching up conversation. "I work at the facility outside town, probably too much, I eat a lot of sushi, I have a weird roommate who's a nice guy and has a nice dog. It's good." He looked to Patrick. "You broke her plates and drank her beer?"
He picked up the little cup of sake and finished it in a swallow. "Just passing through?
