She smiled when he said he loved her wish for the following year, and she could've predicted that. He was a dreamer, and he wanted good things, and he was a good person. She was sure he had shadows she hadn't seen yet, but they weren't things she feared. She smiled, and his voice was in her ear, and it felt like intimacy and promise. "Risks. I think taking risks sounds perfect. If you ever need help, encouragement, anything, anything at all, I'll be here for you. That's my other promise for this coming year."
It felt like permanence, like grounding, like something real and tangible, and it was hers. It didn't belong to Tethys or the government, and that felt good. He felt good.
"Happy New Year, Jeremiah." She leaned against him, and she kissed him back. Fingers in his hair, lips against his, and it was really, really nice. This moment, this firework-lit moment, felt perfect to her.
