"Okay," she said, and while she was the type of person who skipped into the personal space of others with abandon, she didn't push him. He'd tell her. Someday, and one day, and she knew he would. This thing between them, this friendship, it was a like door opening wider and wider and wider, and it felt like something that couldn't be stopped. Maybe she thought too much of it, but she knew he'd tell her somehow. She just knew.
So up, up, up, and she led, and she leaned back against him when he wrapped his arms around her. "This year, I'm going to be free," she said, and it was a big, big statement. It wasn't a resolution. It was like a promise made to the night sky and the fireworks just beginning to pop overhead. "What are you going to do this year?" she asked, returning the question and rubbing fingers over the back of his hand as a countdown began around them.
