She giggled at the dramatics, rolling her eyes in fake protest, before smirking at his approval. For all her strengths, pride got her just as much as anyone. Charlie loved to impress people with her knowledge, almost as much as she loved to prove people wrong or figure out a really tough puzzle. So, namedropping the classic short story was obvious and natural. "If dating apps existed back then, Laura would have been just fine." A thought of noise rumbled in her throat as she dipped another fry in his shake. "Or she would've been catfished. Ugh."
As if on cue, Elvis began to warble through the speakers overhead. Charlie smiled, clearly charmed. "You keep surprising me, Edgelord. I didn't know you were an Elvis guy." She had grown up on her granddaddy playing the King on vinyls after family dinners, standing on his toes while he swayed them both in the living room. A wistfulness flashed over her face before taking another sip of her shake. "Grandpa loved Elvis, too. I can't tell you how many times he'd hum songs as lullabies for me when I Was a kid." Charlie cleared her throat and shook her head. "Very white suburbia, I know. We're such a cliche."
