[Lake: "Sparrow" & Luke]
Luke knew all too well just how stupid people could be. Hell, he was guilty too—sometimes he felt like his life was just a series of stupid decisions sprinkled with occasional smart choices. Things were different now, though. Now, he could be as stupid as he liked, and there were no lasting repercussions. What did it matter if he bled when he couldn't die? Twelve rounds and he was still alive, things stopped having meaning after that. Colors faded and days blurred. He'd come into this town looking, searching, and now it was work that kept him here—but he didn't think of it as work, the goddamned military, work was the NYPD, it was something he liked, it wasn't the government treating him like a dog on a leash and pulling hard when he tried to chew his way through.
Somehow, he'd get out. He'd pick up her trail again—it'd gone cold, leading him here, but he'd find it—and then he'd be gone, gone, gone.
At that moment, though, presently, the only place Luke was going was the lake. Because, again, people could be stupid, and he couldn't just sit in his motel room while some idiot went and drowned themselves. The girl with the bird name might've been crazy, but sometimes crazy was real. Like he'd told her, he'd seen some weird shit. And despite what she said, he was sure he could scare people off better than she could.
Finch was with him, no leash; he didn't need one. In the darkness they were both just shapes, and Luke was messy, unkempt, hardened and wearier than he'd once been. The lake was big, sure, and he was mostly just keeping an eye out for people, anyone lurking around who shouldn't be. But then there was a sound in the air, a voice—Finch cocked his head and Luke did the same, trying to pinpoint where it was coming from. The dog didn't wait, he gave a short, sharp bark and trotted off, leaving the man to follow.
The closer he got, the more he felt like—it was fucking weird, like the voice was familiar, but he didn't know why. Was it singing? He didn't know if it was the girl or someone else.
