It was a little stunning even to him how quickly the moment could change from cheerful banter about positively nothing to such a serious conversation. It wasn't a small thing, telling someone you wanted only to be friends. Ren took it terribly well, in that moment, and nothing could have made Louis feel more terrible about it, really.
The waitress came by at that precise moment with the food. Of course she did. He smiled thinly as she deposited the plates, and waited a polite space for her to get out of range of hearing. "It's always good to be able to provide a service," he murmured, as she crossed the room.
He watched Ren look into his coffee, and his heart sank a little further. "Tell me what you want from me," he said. "I can go. Or I can stay. I'll answer anything you ask honestly."
