The wolf knew the man. Wasn't like the other. Didn't try to singe. Didn't smell wrong. Didn't like trusting new people, but was injured. Would be hungry if this went on too long. Rabbits would go bad dead. Bacon Giver wasn't home. The wolf would have slept there, had it been an option. Not an option. Didn't even consider staying in the woods. Was too old. Didn't run with the pack. Missed his one-time companion. Lifted his head and howled. Was a sad howl, mournful. Was acknowledgement. Remembrance.
The man approached. Squatted. The wolf lowered it's head. Sniffed the air. Didn't come close enough to press cold, black nose to the man's hand. But sniffed.
A moment later, the wolf returned its attention to the door and pawed.
