The wolf watched. The wolf watched, and the man paced. The wolf took breaks to tear at the animal captured between his paws. Severed tendons and ruptured bone. His maw was large and his teeth were big and white. Was bigger than any normal wolf. No way he could go unnoticed. Was too big, too lightly colored. Even the night, with its moon, lit his silver fur up like a beacon. Was safe beneath the house. Watched. Snarled when the man walked close, but did nothing else aggressive. Did nothing else at all, not until he was done with his feast.
Then, he crawled out. Belly to earth, paws scrabbling, and he climbed the small set of stairs and sat at the yellow door. Blood left its mark on the gray of the stairs and deck. The wolf waited.
