Re: [the woods - cave mouth: adrian/newt]
This time the Obscurus failed to withdraw. It rippled a little, skittish and unsettled, and then melted again into a smooth roil. It was an uncanny sight, obeying no particular natural laws, not gravity, not fluid dynamics.
Now that Newt had stepped somewhat inside, there was a sense of mass a little further down the path, deeper into the ground. The blackness was all flowing slowly in one direction, where the darkness gathered in a knot. In the low light, it was almost indistinguishable from the cave walls. Any glimmer of light from the natural crystals deeper within had been snuffed.
If Adrian was somewhere down there, or present, really, at all, he didn't appear capable of responding. But the Obscurus settled, and while the cave radiated with the telltale scent of ash and ozone and the heavy weight of bad feeling, none of that came crashing down on Newt. Instead, it gave him a wide, safe berth. Around his feet, it slid away, leaving him an island of rock, untouched, to stand in. It wasn't as plain as an invitation, but it showed no sign of lashing out.
